Archaeologist Stephen Flinders was working on the medieval site which has been uncovered at St Mary's Church in Ilkeston when a girl's push bike sailed over the wall and landed beside him.
He said: "There was a crash and a thump and this pink bicycle came flying over the church wall.
"I went around to the other side and expected to see someone running off - but there was no one.
"But there were bike tracks and footprints in the snow from the marketplace to the spot where it had been thrown over the wall."
A puzzled Mr Flinders contacted the police and was told they had not received any reports of a stolen bike.
