Graves could become advertising spaces in a Sydney cemetery.

Firms would pay for the upkeep of the resting places of well-known Australians.

In return there would be a bronze plaque on the grave, acknowledging their contribution.

The plan for the Waverley Cemetery is being put together by the local council and the cemetery's owners, reports the Melbourne Age.

Cemetery manager Martin Forrester-Reid says the graves of many famous Australians would be up for grabs.

"They could pay to have it fixed up, then pay to have it maintained," he said. Refurbishing the grave would cost between £1,500 and £4,600 with a yearly upkeep of between £215 and £300.

Only one grave is currently sponsored at the cemetery, that of pioneer aviator Lawrence Hargrave, sponsored by the Royal Aeronautical Society.

Derek Williams of the NSW Cemeteries and Crematoria Association supports the sponsorship plan.

"Cemeteries have limited funding," he said. "It's one of the only avenues we have left to help maintain these relics."
