|
|
| |
I threw up a partition on my hard drive last night and installed Vista 64 Bit Ultimate version to dual boot with XP Pro 32 Bit. I must say that overall I am impressed.
Other than the annoying security warnings that pop up every time you try to launch any application and having to search for Vista 64 Drivers for my hardware, and it still not recognizing my 4 Gigs of RAM (it still only sees 3) I like it ...... I like it a lot.
The new Windows Vista GUI is quite impressive. Although, I must say is seems to be a rip off of Mac OS X/Linux.
I had to search out, download and install the Drivers for my Audigy 2 ZS sound card (it wouldn't even recognize it until I installed the drivers). I also had some fun trying to install Vista Drivers for my Logitech G15 keyboard. The Vista ones from the Logitech site only work for the 32 Bit version of Vista, and since Logitech doesn't have anything available yet for Vista 64 Bit, I had to use a little bit of ingenuity. I found the Windows XP 64 Bit drivers and installed them. When I was finished installing them it gave me a message saying something to the effect of "this program will not work", but it seems to be working like a charm to me.
I also had to find a 64 Bit version of Firefox, which I was able to locate after a quick Google. BTW, the 64 Bit version of Firefox is called Minefield and seems to work quite well except for the fact that it has a limited Add-Ins base.
I haven't tried Windows Mail yet, nor have I installed any Games. I plan on trying to install Oblivion as soon as I finish typing this post.
I'll keep you updated. |

Brilliant !!!!!!...Just getting the 64 bit drivers to jive is HUGE!! Does the 64
bit rendering give the 3d look of Vista a boost??? Again...congrats on
the dual boot install. I'd heard it was a bit of a pain. That also speaks
well for getting the right components for your new rig. |

It seems to, everything seems to be more vibrant, either that or it's just my imagination.

Nope, no pain at all. All I did was use Partition Magic to put up a 25 Gig Primary partition on my hard drive, set my 1st Boot device to my DVD ROM, throw in the Vista disc and select the correct partition for the install and away I went. It automatically creates the Dual Boot setup for you.
BTW, I installed Oblivion and it seems to work ok.
Although I'm having some issues with IE 7 64 Bit (it won't install the Flash player, or I should say it keeps on installing it over and over and over again ..... whenever you're on a site tha utliizes Flash Player. |

msconfig.exe
systemconfiguration
computer startup
advanced options
And here in the last window you can set the amount of ram memory at startup.

Aye, it totally is. They probably noticed all desktop customizers going for the Mac-look so they ripped it off. |

Doing that has no effect on how much memory Windows uses/addresses. The amount of memory that it uses is what it shows in System Properties, which is only 3 Gigs. |

| Strange, you're running the 64 bit version. And as far as i know, this version supports up to 8 gig of ram. |

That's the impression I was under also. As a matter of fact, it's one of the main reasons why I went with the 64 Bit version over the 32 Bit version.
I'm going to do a little research and find out if anyone else is having the same problem. I know it's not a RAM problem because I've run memory tests and everything tests fine and it shows 4 Gigs when testing. |

Check the newsgroups, apparently you're not the only one with this problem. And sooner or later someone will come up with a solution.
I'll be watching the newsgroups to for this problem, cause i also got ram problems under vista. It's only showing 3,25 of the full 4. Next to that there's a problem with oblivion under vista. Sometimes when you use a gate or fasttravel the pc freezes up. |

I've run into a few more glitches since my last post. It seems that Vista 64 Ultimate takes 15 Gigs just to install the OS, and another couple for any special drivers. I only set the original partition size for the Vista install at 25 Gigs, thinking it would be plenty ....... well, it wasn't. After I installed a game (oblivion) and Avast Antivirus I only had 3 Gigs left.
So I went back into XP Pro and resized the partitions with Partition Magic, increasing the Vista partition to 32 Gigs. All went well with the XP Pro side of the partition but it screwed the Vista side. So I had to format the partition and reinstall Vista, then modify the Windows Boot Manager so that it didn't see two installs of Vista.
Fun Stuff. |

ninor,
Check out a program called "EASYBCD"...Something about the the boot
loaders keep cancelling one another out. Here's a link if you are
interested. Got it from a friend who was a beta tester for Vista.

Yeah, I've already got it figured out on the weekend Cujo, but thanks anyways.
In Vista in order to modify the boot log you have to use an elevated command prompt (there is no boot.ini.anymore) Which basically means that even if you're logged into it in the Administrator account you have to right click on the Command Prompt icon and "Run as Administrator". It will then let you run bcdedit (the equivalent of Bootcfg in XP) which is what Vista uses to manage/run bootup sequence. I used it to delete the old Vista boot option that was no longer valid so that instead of having the options to boot into "Earlier Version of Windows" and "Vista" and "Vista", there was only the Earlier Version and one Vista option. |

So how did it go Cujo? Or is the install still in a holding pattern? |
