"All men's souls are immortal, but the souls of the righteous are immortal and divine." Socrates
How did this guy figure this out without a hint from Jew; Christian or Hindu? I brought a similar query up not long ago about this same man...his use of the concept of G-d; but here in this quote he is very specific as to the immortal nature of man.
A couple of us concluded that he had been exposed to some of these ideologies during his travel and soldiering years and I don't mean to bring up the same point...exactly. Socrates had mentioned G-d in another quote I had crossed. In this quote above he definably expresses man's having an immortal soul and very clearly alludes to the ability for man's acquiescing the benchmarks of righteousness and divinity.
This is a very long call from a man that lived during the shifting and volatile times of early Judaism a thousand miles away w/ travel being so limited. Massive mountain ranges separating the west from the east could quite conceivably have prevented him from exposure to any Hindu, Buddhist, Tao or other eastern thought no matter what extent of travel he may have pursued.
Could he have concluded "naturally" the immortal aspect of man and G-d's relation? Many of the American Indians did....and w/ out a Christ or any other eastern contribution.
Socrates being who he was one could presume he deduced this mystery. Being who he was...that would mean he had somehow applied logic to do so. Remember, he was an extraordinarily pragmatic thinker.
Some of you would assume that because of such thinking on Socrates' part he is foolishly misguided. You'd think that a man so intelligent would know better and be an atheist. I do not doubt that Socrates would have questioned - and I dare say thoroughly - the existence of G-d. He was famous for asking "why?" when prodding his students to think. I am sure some clever fellow responded with "Why not?". ...and Id put money on it that Socrates would "dog" that remark.
Socrates mentioned man's immortal soul and of the souls that are righteous, being not only immortal but divine. Why?
